In what was at the time, the second largest merger in American corporate history, NYNEX combined with Bell Atlantic and in the process of moving its corporate headquarters to New York City.

New Yorker's were so disgruntled at the thought of an even larger, more powerful, phone company conglomerate that they needed to send out a powerful message of reassurance to the marketplace.

The task of the advertising was to quell the fears of skittish audience and let them know that a "friendly giant' was coming to the rescue to help "guide"them along the path of new and improved communication options.
